how is paintspace.net connected to paintsquare, jpcl, and jac?

paintspace.net is a product of paintsquare. paintsquare is the online web portal of the coatings industry and is produced by the publishers of jpcl, the journal of protective coatings & linings and jac, the journal of architectural coatings. content is occasionally shared and supported between these different media outlets.

although jpcl is the official publication of sspc: the society for protective coatings, paintspace.net, paintsquare, and jac have no direct affiliation with this association.

how do i find people?

to find people on paintspace.net, enter a key word, name, etc. into the search box in the upper left of any page and click the 'go' button. on the home page, click the 'find people' link in the 'check it out' menu in the left column. throughout the site, anywhere a user's screen name appears in blue, bold type, click the name to visit that person's profile.

how do i create my own profile?

from the home page of paintspace.net, click on the 'create your own paintspace' under the 'get started' section. if you are not currently registered on paintspace.net or paintsquare, you will be asked to first fill out the basic registration form.

what if i don't want certain people to see my profile?

you have the power to set your privacy preferences from your dashboard. one of these preferences is who you allow to view your profile. you can set your profile to only be viewable by anyone, by people that you pre-approve, or even by nobody at all.

what are tags and how are they used?

tags are user-defined keywords that can be applied to a profile, a blog entry, a photo, a video, a network, a group, etc. they are a way to help search the site for a specific technology, industry, category, phrase, etc. tags are created by users, and the list is always growing.

they are, in essence, a list of suggested search terms that are likely to return the results you're looking for.

as profiles are created and content is posted, each user has the opportunity to tag the posting with selected tags from the current list, or add to the list of tags if none apply. in most of the search pages throughout the site, there is a option to select tags to include in your search.

what's the difference between networks and groups?

both networks and groups are collections of people with common area of expertise or interest. each allows you to locate other members and participate in online message board discussions.

networks are pre-defined by paintspace.net and are open to all registered users to freely join.

groups are user-defined and can be set to public, meaning anyone can join, or private, meaning only those approved by the user who created or administers the group can join. some groups may be hidden from view except to those invited by the administrator.

how do i join networks or groups?

simply go to the main landing page for networks or groups, search for the network or group that interests you, and click the 'join' link. in the case of private groups, you'll have to first request to join by clicking the appropriate link. that will send a message to the group administrator. if he or she approves your request, you'll be instantly joined and receive a confirming message in the message center of your dashboard. if your request is denied, you will not be able to join the private group.

can i create my own groups?

first, you must be a premium profile user. premium profile users can create and administer their own custom groups, including deciding on a name, description, inviting people to join, and monitoring the associated message board.

how do i post something in the community datebook?

first, you must be a premium profile user. on your dashboard under the 'datebook' section, click the 'post an event' link. on the ensuing page, there is dropdown menu option to select where to post the event - to your personal datebook, or to your personal datebook and the community datebook. you can also go back and edit previously-posted events using the same process.

how do i post content and update the info displayed in my profile?

all content for your profile is entered, updated, edited, and deleted through your dashboard. you can reach the dashboard by clicking the 'my dashboard' link at the top of any page once you log in.

on the dashboard, you will find links and tools for accessing and sending messages, updating all types of content, setting preferences, and viewing the stats of your profile.

what content is appropriate or not appropriate for posting on paintspace.net?

paintspace.net is a social community for the coatings industry, and is meant to be a place for the exchange of professional ideas and opinions as they relate to the coatings industry. ultimately, it's up to each user to decide for himself or herself what this means. however, we do reserve the right to remove content that is offensive, detrimental, or demeaning to other users that we determine has no place for that type of thing in a professional business setting in accordance with our terms and conditions.

how do i report inappropriate or objectionable content?

can i include a link to my profile on my website, e-mail signature, or business card?

absolutely. each profile is set up with its own url that we encourage you list on your website, e-mail signature, and business card. your url can be found by clicking the 'see personal url' link on your dashboard.

how do i message other users?

there are several ways. first, you can initiate contact with friends that you've already added by using the message center on your dashboard. or, once you do a people search, the results screen will have a link for you to send a message to the person you select.

some users may set their privacy preferences to disallow messages to be sent to them by other users, and we will certainly respect those settings.

can my paintspace.net message be forwarded to my e-mail address?

by default, messages sent from user to user through paintspace.net are not forwarded to your personal e-mail address, but rather contained and read through the message center built in to paintspace.net. users can, however, set their preference to be notified by e-mail when new messages are waiting for them inside their paintspace.net profile and dashboard.
